Referral Program Rules

Interested in Earning Free Online Trades? Here’s How.

Earn free online trades when you refer new clients who want to enjoy the benefits of trading with Scottrade. Please note, to participate in the Scottrade Referral Program, you must be 18 years of age or older and a legal resident of the United States. Custodial and Employee accounts are ineligible.

What You Get

Both current and new clients who participate in the program will receive 3 free online trades to be used during the next 3 online equity or option, market or limit, good until cancelled (GTC) or day orders placed for stocks priced above $1. All other fees still apply, including, but not limited to, commissions and/or fees charged for trades in securities priced below $1. And, you can always check your free trades balance under "Free Trades Available" when you log in to your Scottrade account.

Start Earning Trades

  1. Log in to your Scottrade account and click the "Refer Someone You Know" link.
  2. Complete the Referral Program form, and Scottrade will email an invitation to your friend with instructions on how to open an account. You can also click the "Print referral card" link to get your Scottrade Referral Program code to personally give to your friends. Posting of your Scottrade Referral Program code on Scottrade-managed web properties (i.e. Scottrade's Facebook page, YouTube channel, etc.) is prohibited.
  3. Your friend must open a qualifying Scottrade account, using your referral code.
  4. Within 24 hours of your friend's account being approved, once the Scottrade Referral Program code is validated, free trades will be credited to your account and your friend's account. The free trades will be used on the next three online trades made in each account.


All online accounts are eligible for the Scottrade Referral Program with the exception of custodial and employee accounts. Free online trades will be credited once a qualifying account has been opened and funded. Note that the account must remain open and funded for a minimum of six months. Scottrade reserves the right to deny the sign-up bonus in cases it deems appropriate. To participate in the Scottrade Referral Program, a participant must be a natural (individual) person, 18 years of age or older, and a legal resident of the United States. Custodial and Employee accounts are not eligible.

Promotion Rules

The Scottrade Referral Program is designed to introduce new clients to Scottrade. A client will receive free trades only for the first account opened. Trades are not transferrable and must be used within six months or they will automatically expire. Scottrade may, at its sole discretion, change the award to something of approximately the same value.

If Scottrade determines that a client has not complied with these rules, it may immediately and without notice to the client withdraw all benefits including those to his / her friends (without limitation, canceling or declining to apply to the account, any and all awards or promotions issued or to be issued to the client and to any of his or her friends in connection to the Scottrade Referral Program and, by declining to send or stopping from being sent, any Scottrade Referral Program emails).

Personal Information

Scottrade takes every precaution to keep our clients’ personal information and the personal information of their friends and family private. We do not sell, rent or give away personal information our clients provide in the Scottrade Referral Program to any outside third-party except as required to run this program. Why We Use Cookies

Like many websites, our program uses "cookies." A cookie is a piece of data stored on your hard drive containing information about you, our client. A browser stores the cookie information on your hard drive, and if you return to that site later, the cookie is transmitted back to the server that originally sent it. Cookies help the server recall previous information so that it does not need to be re-entered.

Email Policy

The Scottrade Referral Program forbids the use of mass emailing (including Spam), mass communication, or mass marketing to accrue awards and/or to “sell” trades via any public or private forum. Spam is defined as the abuse of any electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk and/or individual messages. Sponsor has the right to determine what is considered "spamming" in this case. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, they may not submit for referral i) group email addresses, ii) email mailing lists, or iii) themselves. The program is limited to new social security/tax ID numbers only.
